Inspiration for those at the final phase.

I never knew Churchill wrote fiction:

‘Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling him to the public.'

Winston Churchill

Platform for short fiction: 5000-20000

University of Plymouth Press (in the UK) is looking for submissions of short fiction between 5000-20000 words, until 30 March 2010. Their journal, Short Fiction, http://www.uppress.co.uk/shortfiction.htm holds further details.

They'll also hold a New Writing Competition in January; I'll post details when I receive them.

Good Luck.

Teacher Man, Frank McCourt

I'm re-reading this book, have you ever read it? Brilliant memoir of 40 years' High School English teaching in New York, and all the inner struggles of a man with two identities: Irish and American, who is sidetracked by history when he should be embracing literature for his PhD. Why are Irish writers so good?

Litswap - what is it?

Like to read but have a ropey memory? Like studying but can't afford the tuition fees? Like socialising and sharing achievements?
Then welcome to Litswap. Learn a piece of literature, an author, a writing style, a historically-related literature event, or a new word, and swap it here.

As I'm writing, it's been highlighted on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? that the wife of a famous writer shares her name with an American Actress. Leave a comment if you'd like to guess the answer (or know it!) and I'll post the correct answer.
